I will/do teach the following languages:
French, German, Spanish
I teach these year groups;
Reception, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, mixed year classes
About Me:
Originally a Secondary MFL teacher for over 10 years, I retrained to teach in Primary in 2004 and now teach a mixed whole KS2 class. I've introduced French and we also do a summer half-term 'taster' course in another language (so far German with a football theme, and Spanish with a food theme)

    Thanks for the welcome.
    In answer to your questions, we have up to 60 feeder primaries doing different languages to different degrees (or not!). Only just acquired the community responsibility so haven't worked with any yet, except for one Y6 (out of only two schools) doing German, so no idea how it will go. With that group our Y12 linguists went to help out with Christmas activities & a presentation of their school for a German primary, which was well received.
    Thanks also for the tip on email avoidance - my problem is that when an alert for a comment for me is sent, it arrives 10 times! Any ideas on that?

    Hi, well it's a bit complicated. I am just about to become MFL coordinator and at the min it's just KS2 who do French but i want to introduce MFL into KS1. As for German I did a German degree in my previous life as a student and am a self-professed lover of all things Germanic! Unfortunately there is a huge gap where primary German, i feel, should be in my LA.
    So the long and short of it is i am looking for as much advice on MFL coordination as poss!

    That's fine Jo. I would really like to get your feedback on the Catherine Cheater scheme of work. Perhaps you know of posts or blogs elsewhere that talk about it. I would like to know how your school is using it. My own feeling about primary languages is that it is all about capturing kids' imagination, inspiring creativity, a sense of adventure. I underlined all of the instances in the QCA schemes where it mentioned pupils 'enjoying' whatever activity they are engaged in. The danger with an over arching scheme, however well-intentioned, is that it becomes a bit too uniform and hence dull, because it is the expression of one set of ideas. I've not taught it yet. Interested to hear what you think.

    Thanks Jo, there's a lot to look at, so many people are doing blogs these days. It's one of my personal targets for the next year to try and get one going. You were right about the email in box filling up. Thanks. I see that you were once a secondary teacher. I'm sort of half and half at the minute. I teach secondary for 2 days, and primary, 4 different ones, on the other 2 days. I then give myself Friday off. How did you retrain?

    Hi Jo,
    Thanks for the message. Thought I'd better do something, since I've been put down to teach Primary Spanish some lessons next year. Must also apologise for the Alternative Eurovision Song Contest...I've been so busy I just haven't had time to do anything for it :o(

    Hi Jo,
    Yes, I originally qualified as an AST just in MFL, but then the adviser who did the international stuff left, and I was the only one left in the LA who knew anything about it, so I kind of got that added to my job by default. My school has been involved in Comenius since 1998 and I am just compiling the portfolio for our 3rd ISA (it's driving me mental!) So yes, feel free to put any queries my way !
