Using Dear Zoo as a theme for French or Spanish in KS2

As requested, here is the slideshare of the presentation Lisa Stevens and I made at Joe Dale's IOW Conference this weekend. (Hi Helena and Isabelle - great to meet you in the flesh at last!)
We used the book Dear Zoo as a theme and tried to show how it can be (and has been) used at any level from yr 3 phoneme/sounds/enjoyment of the story level right through to yr 6 manipulation of text and creation of own stories using scaffolds over the course of a few weeks. We used Spanish & French examples, so hope it's not confusing. If anyone else has used this book and wants to share what they did we'd love to hear from you - or just add a comment. Thank you! PS (slideshare had a problem with this link earlier on but promise it will be fixed asap - I'll check back later today to see & if there are still problems will just upload the ppt if anyone wants a copy here)
Can't really show the whole book in the presentation but you get the idea, if anyone would like some of the word docs for the text games (based on food chains similar to Linda Owen's in her MiniBeast sow) you can download them all ready to slice up & laminate here:

and the link for the jungle book song referred to is here

lyrics for the jungle book song are here

dear zoo.flpOK here goes again... I found the flipchart I mentioned above. It does have page notes every now and again in the activities section so please feel free to use or adapt as ever you want.

Great ideas, thanks for sharing. I've also used 'Cher zoo' with Y4 pupils myself. I've collected 2 crates full of soft toy animals over the years (charity shops and car boot sales mostly) for use in story-telling. One of the activities that children seem to enjoy, when first familiarising themselves with the new vocabulary, is 'Devinez l'animal qui est dans le sac' - I simply place one of the animals in a large P.E. type bag and pupils guess which one it is - the winner comes out to the front to 'lead' the next round of play and so on.

I'm uploading some animal picture cards I've made. The word cards to match. And the associated adjective cards. Hope they're useful.

The images I used on my cards were accessed from the kizclub website which is full of super resources for a range of popular stories - it really is worth bookmarking!

There's also some alternative match-up cards on the TES and a wonderful powerpoint named 'Ma surprise au zoo' full of all kinds of text-related activities. (Thanks to KGBINTERPOL for his/her hard work.)

I've also made a Promethean Active Primary flipchart based on this book - will search it out in my PC's folders and upload asap. Really need to 'spring clean' my files and folders!!

Hi there
It was great for me too to meet F2F. Thanks a lot for sharing your fantastic ideas and resources. I was booked on your session but I had to leave early to catch my plane-my only regret about the conference...

My understanding is that if you have a copy of the book, scanning the pictures is really just making it easier for the kids to see the pictures so is OK. You can always translate books into the language you want if it isn't available in that language - it's also useful if you want to simplify text!
And of course, you always acknowledge the author / illustrator!!

Really enjoyed your presentation, has really enthused me! The idea of masks for the pupils to hide behind is really great! Will also start hunting for puppets. How long ago did you buy yours? Info about copyright really useful, as I've lots of books I'd thought of using. Lorraine

Have tried several times to upload my PPT of Querido Zoo (thanks to Helen Leigh for original) but NING isn't playing nicely! Will keep trying though!
