Jo Rhys-Jones MFL Games

Below is a powerpoint slideshow of games and activities to play in the classroom to help language learning at all levels and I've cross-posted this onto the TES forum to make sure everyone gets to share. The list was started by a TES forum and I would love to keep on adding and updating it… Continue

jane solloway Primary Language Networks in Milton Keynes

I thought people might appreciate bit of background to what's going on in Milton Keynes in the realms of Primary Languages! 2 years ago the local authority made some money available for Primary schools to set up Networks to promote the teaching of Modern Languages amongst themselves and in conjunction/with support from the feeder Secondary schools. We at Loughton joined forces with 2 other local primaries and Denbigh School our local Secondary and formed a Network which was successful last year… Continue

Jo Rhys-Jones Top Ten Tips for Nervous Non-specialists

Ok so I am not exactly a nervous non-specialist myself, but I know a few (well a lot actually) who are, so here are some of my top tips. If anyone would like to add to this please do so - all contributions will be gratefully received!

  1. Get help with pronunciation: Any good commercial scheme of work should c

Jo Rhys-Jones A carousel lesson with a whole KS2 class

Just thought I'd make a quick note of what went on in my classroom this week so far - we're doing the topic of 'Clothes' at the moment.

We first introduced the new vocabulary 2 weeks ago now. So we started as a whole class reading 'Je m'habille, Je te croque' by

Jo Rhys-Jones RSG - Mixed age classes & differentiation - Thurs 14th June 2007

Looking forward to our (Devon South) next RSG meeting with Maggie Peacock and Alison - who will sadly be attending for the last time before she decamps to Switzerland. (I am sooo jealous Ali!) Jenny Smith will be there too in her role as PLC.

Alison and Maggie are planning to bring along lots of materials to hand out for group and pair work. The idea is that this sort of activity takes the pressure and spotlight away from the classteacher for a while, freeing them to work with

Jo Rhys-Jones A scheme of work for a class of Yrs 3,4,5 and 6

I wondered if anyone might be interested in having a look at the rolling program we use at Kingswear Primary.

It is based on the model Joan Dickie has made popular, but with some adaptations to suit our children and the whole school curriculum. It runs over 4 years - A, B, C & D (to accomodate children through yrs.3-6) and is simplified in the table below.

The idea is that the 'basics' are repeated every year, while the 'core structure' is alternated (so Year A is same as Ye

Jo Rhys-Jones Tiny Schools and MFL planning

I teach in one of the many tiny schools in Devon and went to visit the teaching Head of a similar size school to discuss how to plan teaching MFL to a whole KS2 class - that's Years 3,4,5 and 6 altogether.

While the downside might be that on top of extreme ability ranges, there is also a new Year 3 with no previous language learning arriving every year while the rest of the class are starting to feel like they've seen it all before...(phew)..there is also the flip side; childr
