Let's Celebrate the New Year!

Just before the end of term I was lucky enough to watch a Spanish lesson given by Simon Iglesias to a mixed class of Year 5 and 6 which included talking about the New Year celebrations as part of the KS2 Intercultural Understanding objectives. Simon had wanted to show the class a video clip from YouTube - but as this… Continue

SPOTLIGHT TIP POWERPOINT

You can imitate the spotlight function of an interactive whiteboard using powerpoint. These two examples were done for a secondary school but the idea can be used for any text. It doesn't work with pictures as what you are revealing has to be the same colour as the background. However it is useful for reading practice as you vary the speed at which the highlight shape moves over the text. I will try and upload a video explanation of how to do this at some point but you are exploiting the use of… Continue

SMARTBOARD TIP

This might be a trick that everyone already knows but it really focuses kids attention when you use it. In the example above, moving the spyglass around the screen reveals the hidden words that make up a secret message. You need smartboard software to view it and it was created for a secondary school but can be adapted for any topic. The file and explanation of how to create it is… Continue

C.P.D.

OK, so it's that frenzied time of year when the majority of you are inevitably going to be more preoccupied with those Christmas Present Dilemmas than with your own Continuing Professional Development. But just in case anyone is already thinking ahead to setting themselves a linguistic resolution for the New Year, then perhaps you may be interested in these new courses being offered by The Open… Continue

A few of the things I have being doing in class

Hi, thankyou for the comments. I use Early Start German in my after school club. The children seem to respond well to it, I also use my own resources and some others that I have gathered. On a recent trip to Germany I bought some early language books for the children to look at and become used to seeing German in print. I also use bilingual books - even though they are much too difficult - the children like to compare the language and enjoy seeing books they love in other languages. I like… Continue

El pequeño petirrojo

At this time of year I am regularly greeted at meetings in the West Midlands area with 'What's that story you told last year ?' or 'You're the one who tells that story about the robin, aren't you?'

For the last three I've promised to put it online. And I've finally done it!

I first came across this story on a… Continue

Ideas for Christmas

It's December, and Jo has decorated the page, so guess we'd better acknowledge that Christmas is coming! So, in case you don't find it all by yourself, I thought I'd point you towards a post on my blog entitled Resources for Christmas. I could just copy it all here but I don't like to do that too often as it seems like cheating to me. So if you're interested, all you have to do is… Continue
