Welcome to Talkabout!

Profile Information

I will/do teach the following languages:
French, German, Spanish
I teach these year groups;
Reception, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, mixed year classes
About Me:
Originally a Secondary MFL teacher for over 10 years, I retrained to teach in Primary in 2004 and now teach a mixed whole KS2 class. I've introduced French and we also do a summer half-term 'taster' course in another language (so far German with a football theme, and Spanish with a food theme).
Until September 08 I shared a whole KS2 class with the Headteacher in a tiny Devon school, but now have a temporary one year post as Primary Languages Consultant in Hampshire -woohoo!!
Another update - as of 1st April (I know I know) have become Languages Adviser for Hampshire until ...well until the standards fund runs out I suppose!
Favourite/recommended MFL Website:
http://www.atantot.com/
Favorite MFL resource:
Sock puppets and powerpoint!

Some of the babies have a dummy in their mouths & don't speak a word in English!! I'm getting more confident with the babies, but have to choose my soft toys carefully, as they're scared of some of them!!

Thanks Jo. At least they've finally got a placement sorted for me now after 1/2 term. I'm doing a Secondary PGCE but really want to do Primary afterwards.

How long have you got??!! I was under the impression more language teachers were needed urgently, but I don't exactly feel encouraged/supported in my quest for a qualification. Completely demoralised! Please tell me it will all be worth it in the end ...

Thanks for the info, sounds great.... I was thinking of doing some volunteering work focusing on languages in local primary schools and will definitely do that for a little while... I guess you just call and ask for a meeting with the Head Teacher..? I will then do my PGCE I'm sure .. tad apprehensive as I finished my studies 10 years ago. Did you do a PGCE? How did you find it? Is it sometimes competitive to get on a course due to high demand? I imagine its quite a high work load although it is only a year .. lot of questions I know but its great to be able to get some feedback from others rather than running through a million things in my own head!... and I do feel excited about this change of career... I don't think it would have been right for me in my 20s.. but sounds perfect now I'm in my 30s if that makes any sense ! Helen

Hi Jo, thanks for the welcome, I only stumbled across this site quite by chance. I can't believe all the great resources and advice that is available here. I have already e-mailed friends to direct them here. I hope at some point I will be able to add a few resources.

Thanks,
Deborah
