One language for four years or 4 languages for one?

I would appreciate views from your own experience, or pointers to existing research, as to whether there is any value in changing from learning one language over the four KS2 years to learning three or four languages over the course of KS2. Our school has, for many years, taught French formally from Year 3 to Year 6, by which I mean addressing all four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening through a progressive programme, with an Introductory Year in Year 2 (less formal). Pupils…See More

About Me:
I'm a Primary teacher teaching overseas as a Primary French Specialist. I teach Y2 to Y6 twice a week in the British School - Muscat in the warm and sunny Sultanate of Oman - a fab place to be so I've stayed here for 14 years! I have my own dedicated classroom (portacabin, actually, but I like to call it my French chalet!) I'm totally thrilled to have a found such a great PMFL forum having been teaching in a bubble out here.
Favourite/recommended MFL Website:
http://www.zut.org.uk
Favorite MFL resource:
I didn't know most of the commonly used UK resources existed till last week at the Primary Lang Conference so I've been making up a lot myself! Use La Jolie Ronde stuff a bit, as well as the great American catalogue of MFL resources, 'Teacher's Discovery'. Excellent song CDs from them are the 'Sing, Dance, Laugh and Eat Quiche' series.

Hi Rosie
I don't look at this blog too often so sorry for the delay! I'll say hello to Rob and Sara for you. Term is frenetic already. In y3 and 4 we have a 30 minute lesson a week which is slit into 15mins storytelling and gesturing-and 15 mins Rigolo episodes/activities. We don't do everything as time doesn't allow it. We have just started Rigolo in Y5 and 6-they have 1 hour per week--will be finishing off the later chapters in Rigolo 1 then doing some more interesting units from Rigolo 2 before they enter Y7 and start Métro 2. Our turnover is not as bad as it used to be and our storytelling and gestures keeps all skill levels engaged and challenged whilst recycling the top 100 verbs. Hope your start of term is going well and keep in touch. Steve

Hi again Rosie - thank you for your comment on the QCA Plage blog I did.

Sorry to hear you had problems downloading the lame that goes with audacity. I cheated and got my Year 6 to download it for me! One of the boys has a very techie dad and so must spend a lot of time with him on the computer, because he had it up and running in less than 10 minutes. Is there anyone at the school who can visit your 'chalet' and help out just to install it?

Fair point about the work that goes into planning for units you made. I do get a day a week to use for planning/creating materials if I am not using it to do training so that's how I get the time.

Also so many people helped me by posting/sharing maths and science resources when I first retrained for Primary (I was soooo worried about teaching those subjects) that it seemed only fair to share what I've managed to do in MFL - which is why I've written it up - in far more detail than I would for myself!

It's pouring with rain again here in Devon now - but I'm off to do training at a wee school up on the moors this afternoon so I can hear a pub lunch beckoning - I luuuurv Thursdays!

Take care (and our last podcast was in January shhh don't tell Joe!)

Thanks, Isabelle,

Much appreciated! My head is reeling with the sudden onslaught of all the available material and support. I'm now off for my first day of the school week - we work Sat to Wed with Thurs/Fri as weekend. Will be trying to put into my lessons all sorts of ideas I've started to glean from my day-long surf yesterday...I'll check out your site later today and get round to sharing my stuff when I work out how! Having done a crash course on delicious tags from Jo's links yesterday that's yet another thing I need to get my head round!

Have a good weekend,

Rosie

Hi Rosie

Wish I was there!-Not very sunny in Manchester at the moment...
I am sure you will find our network friendly and helpful.
I teach French too and you may wish to visit my blog to check out my links to French Primary resources. Go to http://isabellejones.blogspot.com then scroll down until you see a long list of key words on the right (delicious tags), click on French, then on +primary to get a fully updated list of links to resources for Primary French.
I hope it is of use!

I'm not sure it's particularly exciting...just cooked the dinner and am putting the kids to bed now, much as in the UK, only difference is it's in perpetual sunshine, and we put the air conditioner on at night for them. Teaching is good here, though, with no real discipline issues, small classes (22 max) and what I see as plenty of money for resources, although there are always those who complain - as there would be anywhere!

What an exciting life you must have! I felt like I was working in a bubble just in West Midlands so don't know how you feel! Glad you've found us! Only found it myself a couple of months ago and it's great!

Hi! I'm so excited to have found this forum, as I've been teaching French in a complete bubble out here in Oman. Look forward to sharing ideas and reading everyone else's!
