Can anyone suggest an on-line resource for children to learn Spanish during that early morning work slot? A class teacher who doesn't speak Spanish wants to learn along with her class - Coffee Break Spanish might be good but it's only audio. Oh an...
Hi Nicky
Have added a blog entry with links & resources to help to embed phonics - Jan 13 entry.
Please give me some feedback on what you think! Also let others know if you think they might find the stuff useful. To be honest, with this forum, I have got my head round how to post from scratch (just cant' remember the name of it some of the time, I browse so much ....) so I keep going back to the email alert I got from you at the moment! I would like to leave Lisa a message and know she's on here but just haven't got the few mins it would take to find my way about the site!
Take care - hope the stuff is useful!
Hi Nicky
I've done this phonics with beginners of all ages, including parents! When we had year 9 beginners and year 10 fast track GCSE as well as our year 7s of course, they've all done it and haven't viewed it as beneath them - I think mainly because once they see how valuable the knowledge is and how quickly they can apply what they've learnt to new text and actually achieve authentic pronunciation, they're hooked. For follow up activities, I recommend syllable sqaures, dictations of other kinds, comic strips to read out loud (if carefully chosen, they can often guess the meanings of these, even with quite a few unfamiliar words), short headlines in Spanish (if you choose stories that have also been in the news here, students can often guess the gist here too), also giving them lists of words and getting them to classify them by stresses. I know ideas aren't always that easy to explain in words and sometimes seeing is better, but I hope this is useful. I have downloaded quite a few comic strips that I use, some headlines and made a few of the classifying activities - i will upload these to my blog if that would be useful? let me know,
Thanks for contacting me too!
Best,
Rachel

Welcome to our friendly group!
I hope you find it useful and I am looking forward to sharing ideas and resources with you. You may be intested in the links to the resources I have on my blog for French and Spanish as I have taught them at Primary and secondary level -OK, and I am a native French speaker as well! To find the links, go to My Languages then scroll down to a long list of keywords to the right (delicious tags), just click on the relevant keyword to get an updated list of links to resources e.g. French or Spanish . You can filter for just Primary resources by clicking +primary once in del.icio.us to get a list of French/ Spanish Primary resources only.
I hope it is of use... Give us a shout if you need anything specific!!
Hi Nicky
Welcome to Talkabout - hope you find the network friendly and useful!
I'm interested in the language mixes you teach by the way - do you always alternate two years of one language followed by two years of the other in your school? Do others nearby do something similar - and how do you find it? Am wondering if it might be a compromise I could suggest to a group of schools who feed to the same secondary but are in disagreement over which language to teach.
Anyway - looking forward to sharing ideas with you!

Yes, I did speak at the PLS. I did a session on Phonics one day and a session on literacy another day.
