Instant tricks for text

I came across a great little site called Teacher's Pet that provides you with a program that installs a toolbar into MS Word. This is a text manipulation generator that allows you to create fun language activities at a click of a button.I have posted an explanation of how it works here, and there are links to the site. It would be useful too in any Primary school for…See More

Drama sketches

I have put a post about this on my blog page, together with a short script I prepared for a yr 7 group but might be suitable for yr 6 too. I am interested in getting any feedback from colleagues about this area as I feel it is really under explored. Does anyone else do this much?MarkSee More

Useful site

Just thought I would post this link to a site I stumbled upon today. There is a fantastic load of material here for French and Spanish teachers. It is a Spanish company site and languages represented are all the mainland Spanish ones plus French and English.http://www.childtopia.com/index.phpSee More

Adding Flash files to Powerpoint

Here is a video explanation of how to do this. It works for any shockwave flash file but the example looks at how to extract any of the flash animations in Smart Board 10 and import them into Powerpoint. It also shows you how you can export any features such as images, soundfiles, video, contained in the notebook and use them in worksheets linked to your Notebook display. Any ideas that you can see…See More

About Me:
I am a secondary school teacher by experience but have found myself involved in Primary Languages and love it. I teach plus act as a consultant for anyone wanting support to bring the subject alive through creativity, songs, drama, puppetry, and setting up international links.
Favourite/recommended MFL Website:
http://www.mdlsoft.co.uk
Favorite MFL resource:
Task Magic provides a lot of exercises for your bucks plus easy to create worksheets.

One of the most useful bits of software I use is Sanako Media Assistant Solo. If you want a tool that seamlessly lets you use video and sound files with your own subtitles, questions, vocab help to appear with the clips, this is the best I have found. Short of going to the country, it is one of the most useful tools for bringing the language alive in the classroom.

PGCE Primary Teacher with MFL specialism looking for a job

Hi good people

I'm posting this on the forum on behalf of a colleague on Twitter, Vicky Pollitt. She has re-trained as a Primary teacher with an MfL specialism having come from an impressive project management background in some top UK companies.

I know it's late in the day and posts have largely been filled but if you know of any posts going or can simply save this email for future reference, I would be very grateful.

Many pupils, one voice - using singing leading techniques to empower your lessons

Copied from my Souffler blog site

I'm writing this post as a follow up to the previous post about Eric Whitacre's virtual choir. In that, I said that I have borrowed the concept behind all collective singing and am learning to apply it to language learning, that successful blending of many voices into one sound is incredibly powerful and emotionally rich.

This is my first…

April 2nd 2011 - Day 1 in my Mission to rescue Language teachers and Pupils from RUBBISH songs!

Song and game idea to teach Sports and likes/dislikes in any language

Here is a simple idea to teach sports and likes dislikes to the backing track of Manu Chao's Me gustas tu. I've knicked a spanish song shamelessly for French! You could use it though for any language and even for a different topic.

Good luck everyone as you get back to work!

How to write your own songs for language teaching

Hi

I posted a new article on this here. It was the fruit of a 4 week Sing Up funded project to assess the impact of singing on language learning. It was only a short time so hard conclusions can't be drawn but I thought the feedback from the pupils at the end of this article was very telling, especially as their comments were completely unprompted and they had no warning they were going to be interviewed.…

Using FL songs to help improve pronunciation

Hi Everyone.

I don't get back to this wonderful site as often as I should but as I started out here when blogging et al was a very novel thing to do, so kind of feel it's a bit like home!

Anyway, just thought I would share a couple of posts from my own blog that have been drawing a lot of traffic and want to share in particular with primary MFL teachers.

If you know anything about my pet topic on the souffler blog site, I am passionate about using music to help…

Hi Mark,
First of all, looking at the time you wrote your post - are you working too hard!!!!! Really good to hear I helped in some way!! I am busy teaching music in a large primary school for 3 days and co-ordinating French there. We are working for Sing up awards - my challenge is to get all staff on board as they are so used to me doing all the music as the specialist. Combining MFL and music can kill so many birds with one stone I keep telling them -French, Sing up and also being active - have you used Take 10 in French (on little linguist web site) - that's brilliant.
I also teach music and French in a village school.
Really nice to hear you are enjoying lots of new ventures through finding Sing up. We have Vocal Force training here now - like you, I've had loads of free singing training -it's great.
Keep in touch,
Alison

Hi Mark
Just spotted your comment on the drag'n'drop ppt. Glad you like it. Joe Dale first introduced me to it and he was sent it by two guys in Germany - I'm sure he'll know if there are other useful macros around.

I've got a separate ppt on motion paths and another one for triggers if you'd like - can't find them tonight but I know I've got a copy on my laptop somewhere so will hunt them down if they are any use to you.

Thanks for your IWB tips by the way - it's really great to have practical examples and thank you for sharing them!

Hi Mark, I am sorry that I haven't logged in here for ages.I do use drama in my language lessons, especially with my older students, however funding restrictions have meant that my lesson time has been decreased.
I will answer your question, in full, based on my past experiences, once I am back home. I am interstate at the moment - I am in Sydney, New South Wales but I live in Adelaide,South Australia. :)

Hiya Mark, nice to "meet" you, I am also just starting out in primary after teaching secondary. Loving it so far. We're using Catherine Cheater for Y3 and 4, then starting Y5 off with the textbook "Expo" - yes I know it's a KS3 book but we're a Prep school so there's more time for French in the curriculum. Using CC SOW is fab, but I find my Y5 lessons a bit dull so need to jazz them up a bit! Which schemes are you using in your teaching? Sarah x

Hi Mark - hope you don't mind - I'm moving your (excellent) question about Henri Des songs to discussions as the blog area so people can respond and discuss. Will add my own opinion too coz we use CC, but in a slightly different way to other schools...
