Profile Information

I will/do teach the following languages:
French
I teach these year groups;
3, 4, 5, 6
About Me:
I am a secondary school teacher by experience but have found myself involved in Primary Languages and love it. I teach plus act as a consultant for anyone wanting support to bring the subject alive through creativity, songs, drama, puppetry, and setting up international links.
Favourite/recommended MFL Website:
http://www.mdlsoft.co.uk
Favorite MFL resource:
Task Magic provides a lot of exercises for your bucks plus easy to create worksheets.

One of the most useful bits of software I use is Sanako Media Assistant Solo. If you want a tool that seamlessly lets you use video and sound files with your own subtitles, questions, vocab help to appear with the clips, this is the best I have found. Short of going to the country, it is one of the most useful tools for bringing the language alive in the classroom.

Creating puzzles and jigsaws

Hi

I have put up a post to a free site called Jigsawplanet that enables you to create some free puzzles on any image file, bit picture or text, you have. Here are two examples, one of an image, the other of a simple text. You can make the puzzles easier than this. The site allows you to choose the level of difficulty.

French Autumn poems

Hi

I have put info about some poems I found on the subject of Autumn here.

I have simply put material I found elsewhere onto a Smartboard Notebook file for easier viewing but the site I found them on is referenced and has links to a lot of 'comptines' and poems suitable for KS2.

November 5th - Harry Potter an the Exploding text

Hi everyone.

If you are looking for an idea with some whizz bangs and explosions for Thursday you could try using or adapting materials I have posted at souffler.co.uk

It might look at first sight that the text is too hard for Primary age kids but I think you would be surprised at how much they could understand if you teach them the tools to be a Language detective and 'decode' a text. Plus they get to have a go at a Powerpoint that has l… Continue

Instant tricks for text

I came across a great little site called Teacher's Pet that provides you with a program that installs a toolbar into MS Word. This is a text manipulation generator that allows you to create fun language activities at a click of a button.

I have posted an explanation of how it works here, and there are links to the site. It would be useful too in any Primary school for liter… Continue

Drama sketches

I have put a post about this on my blog page, together with a short script I prepared for a yr 7 group but might be suitable for yr 6 too. I am interested in getting any feedback from colleagues about this area as I feel it is really under explored. Does anyone else do this much?

Splat the teacher

I've uploaded a powerpoint version of this game here. A cathartic experience for all of your pupils, especially if you are brave enough to subsitute the cartoon teacher with your own photo!

Useful site

Just thought I would post this link to a site I stumbled upon today. There is a fantastic load of material here for French and Spanish teachers. It is a Spanish company site and languages represented are all the mainland Spanish ones plus French and English.

Hi Mark
Just spotted your comment on the drag'n'drop ppt. Glad you like it. Joe Dale first introduced me to it and he was sent it by two guys in Germany - I'm sure he'll know if there are other useful macros around.

I've got a separate ppt on motion paths and another one for triggers if you'd like - can't find them tonight but I know I've got a copy on my laptop somewhere so will hunt them down if they are any use to you.

Thanks for your IWB tips by the way - it's really great to have practical examples and thank you for sharing them!

Hi Mark, I am sorry that I haven't logged in here for ages.I do use drama in my language lessons, especially with my older students, however funding restrictions have meant that my lesson time has been decreased.
I will answer your question, in full, based on my past experiences, once I am back home. I am interstate at the moment - I am in Sydney, New South Wales but I live in Adelaide,South Australia. :)

Hiya Mark, nice to "meet" you, I am also just starting out in primary after teaching secondary. Loving it so far. We're using Catherine Cheater for Y3 and 4, then starting Y5 off with the textbook "Expo" - yes I know it's a KS3 book but we're a Prep school so there's more time for French in the curriculum. Using CC SOW is fab, but I find my Y5 lessons a bit dull so need to jazz them up a bit! Which schemes are you using in your teaching? Sarah x

Hi Mark - hope you don't mind - I'm moving your (excellent) question about Henri Des songs to discussions as the blog area so people can respond and discuss. Will add my own opinion too coz we use CC, but in a slightly different way to other schools...

Bonjour Mark

I am sure you will love our friendly group. You may be intested in the links to the resources I have on my blog for French and lots of other languages. I am a secondary teacher too and I have been French and /or Spanish in primary for 4 years now. To find the links, go to My Languages then scroll down to a long list of keywords to the right (delicious tags), just click on the relevant keyword to get an updated list of links to resources e.g. French... You can filter for just Primary resources by clicking +primary once in del.icio.us to get a list of French Primary resources only.

I hope it is of use...
