Revised Primary Toolkits.

Should we have a new Scheme of Work to go with the draft NC? Or should it stand on its own, leaving people a free choice of materials? There's a lot of discussion about this at the moment. As my tuppence worth, I've revised my primary French toolkit and posted it here http://johnbald.typepad.com/language/2013/06/french-toolkit-for-primary-national-curriculum.html.  My basic idea is…See More

Bilingual Schools Education Network - BLEN - great value conference, 8th Feb.

Not easy to get time off for a conf these days, but BLEN may well be worth it. Not for profit, and a lot of practising teachers, including the estimable John Connor, Joe Dale with the latest on ipads, St Paul's School, Brighton on setting up bilingual education without a pot of money, assessment based on Devon's excellent and manageable system, and some thoughts from me on the new draft NC, which should be published by then. Le Français en Ecosse

This company offers reliable, funded courses in France and Spain via British Council, and is well worth investigating as one of the few remaining sources of money to support primary languages. People who've come back from these courses have recommended them to me highly. Website is here http://www.lfee.net/  See More

Years 1 and 2 after 2 terms of French

I've been working with a Hackney primary school on the ideas for grammar I've been posting.  We've got clear progress from Years 1 and 2 to Years 3 and 4, and I've just posted here a note on the last lesson this term with a Years 1 and 2 class, which was very encouraging. My key idea is that if the main adjustments we have to make to our thinking are clear from the outset, then…See More

New Approaches to Spanish, French and grammar for young speakers of English.

For some time, I've been developing an approach to the very first lessons in new languages that is designed to anticipate and avoid failure by building the biggest adjustments that children need to make to their thinking into the initial lessons, and then practising. I've now uploaded the French and Spanish versions to my blog, www.johnbald.typepad.com, and am interested in comments. I'll be presenting a paper on grammar at the ALL conf on Friday…See More

Primary Languages - the gift of time (TDA)

I gave a presentation to the Teaching Schools Alliance for the TDA on Tuesday, and have uploaded the powerpointat this link..  The idea is, I think, a new approach to primary languages, beginning with the first person pronoun, supported by a gesture, and working out from there to other people, then negative and positive forms of verbs,…See More

Hi John

Thanks for adding me as a friend. I was interested to see that you seem to be doing the same kind of work that I am just stepping out to do here in the Midlands. I have put some examples of a few songs and ideas for the IWB here and on my very infantile and first stab blog here. I will check out your site and the resources you mention above none of which I have heard of before. How do you structure what you are doing in Hackney?

regards
Mark

Hi John

What a profile! Welcome to our friendly group! I hope you find it useful and I am looking forward to sharing ideas and resources with you. You may be intested in the links to the resources I have on my blog for French, German and Spanish. To find the links, go to My Languages then scroll down to a long list of keywords to the right (delicious tags), just click on the relevant keyword to get an updated list of links to resources e.g. French/ German/ Spanish... You can filter for just Primary resources by clicking +primary once in del.icio.us to get a list of French/ German/ Spanish Primary resources only.

I hope it is of use...

Hi John
Welcome to our ning which I hope you find friendly and fun. I've read your blog through links on Joe Dale and was very interested in your recent posts about the Ofsted report and Liz Lightfoot's piece in the Observer. Is it me or do these things always get published during the summer holidays? Is it the media placing languages at the bottom of the public's list of priorities or vice versa do you think? Anyway - welcome!
Just a quick technical aside - sometimes this site will send you automated emails by default whenever anything is updated/added/commented on etc. To stop these emails filling your inbox you can switch off the alerts by clicking on 'My Settings' - top right underneath 'Hello John Bald' - then go to 'email' and untick all the little boxes.
I'm off now to investigate 'Little Tails' - not heard of that, thank you!
