Statutory MFL in the UK

Thank you. And am I right in saying eventually children will be expected to leave school at a level recognised by the common reference framework?

Realised I made the fatal mistake of writing this when tired! I meant to say ' I thought it was 2010'...

Hi Helen

I'm the PL Consultant for Bedford Borough. Not surprised you and your supervisor are confused; it all rests on the term `entitlement' which seems to mean many different things to many different people and has done for the past few years. At the moment children in KS2 have an entitlement to MFL. From September 2011 it will be compulsory for children in Y3 with, presumably the rest following on. In practice 92% of schools nationally are already teaching some language but this does not necessarily mean to all classes (see the June 2009 NFER research for latest stats.)
Suggest you look at www.primarylanguages.org.uk for more info.
