Talkabout Primary Languages

A network for all who teach languages to children

Hiya All

Just wondering if anyone can help me please? I go once a week into a Primary school to teach Spanish and we are planning (or rather I am planning) to have a Spanish day in June. Has anyone got any ideas that they have used in their own schools that are simple, effective but easy to organise and implement as the teachers are not very confident-a big ask I know.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Helen:

These are things I would do but you need help from classroom teachers and assistants:

- Everyone will come with a Spanish dress or a party dress (girls) and boys will come with a white t-shirt and I red scarf.

- I will be making some paper fans and flowers (classroom assistant can help with this) hats for boys

- I will show them clips of flamenco dancing and teach them (just few moves) if you have the resource TAKE 10 book and DVDs they have clips of Spanish children learning to dance.

- Invite a native Spaniard if you know one

- Look at a Spanish artist and do some art

- Do aereobics in Spanish

- Do some currency add up with EUROS

- Play bingo

-Do a quiz

Hope it helps ..where are you in the country??

Patricia

Thanks Patricia. Ideas look great. I did have take 10 but lent it to someone and never got it back. I am in Tipton in the West Midlands.

Get the local High School involved.  One of the schools I work in did this successfully a few years ago.  A teacher from the PE dept (they didn't do a dance/drama course there) and some of the girls came in and demonstrated some very simple moves to flamenco music, followed by the children.  They took lots of photos as it was going to be used as part of their assessments/coursework.  Worth a try!

Paella recipe/ artwork - depending on the language level.  For older ones maybe an online video demo, followed by spoken/written language work.  For younger ones making up a plate of paella with coloured rice and tissue paper etc to represent the other ingredients.

Dressing in the colours of the flag.

Researching Spain/Spanish-speaking country and making tourist brochures.

Thanks Barbara- great ideas. Will contact secondary school. Anything is worth a try!

Hi Helen

If and when the CILT site is back up and running normally again, it may be possible to access the archive of the Primary Languages forum.

My friend and colleague, Jessica Norrie, wrote an extensive post about Spanish days; I do hope it will still be there and that all the expertise and knowledge of dedicated Primary practitioners will not be lost to us!

Best wishes

Jan

I hope it is still there too Jan. I look forward to reading it!

Have you got TAke 10 in Sp back now? Do you want to borrow mine? When is it for?? Apologies for only just seeing this post, or I would have offered earlier!
