I am starting to think about this years EDL and I am hoping to mark it properly in school this year as this is the first year all of KS2 will be doing language learning as part of the timetable and see it as a bit of a launch. So far I'm thinking possibly of having some sort of Eurovision-type competition where each class learns a song/rhyme and performs in a special assembly and everyone coming in fancy dress eg choose a country and dress up in something typical/stereotypical/football kit etc. I'd also like some competitions for individual pupils to do in the weeks beforehand with prizes to give out on the day but not sure what yet. Would be great to hear everyone elses ideas for the day and whether you have any ideas for what the competitions could be so what are you all doing?
Hi Emma, I was reading your postings about EDL as I am also beginning to think about what I am going to do. I think I am probably in a similar position to you, it is the first year with the whole school learning German and the pressure is on me to mark the ocassion! I wondered how far you had got with your ideasand if you could give me any inspiration.....I'm not inspired by CILT website!
Hiya Thea- Fraid you're either late for this year or very early for next year! European Day of Languages is on 26th Sept. Never too early to start planning though!
no, am thinking about next year - trying to start now so that it's fresh in everyone's memories and everyone can tell me about the ideas that worked best!!
Very organised! Good plan! Good Luck!
We did a music quiz in the classrooms based on national Anthems- seemed to work quite well. Children found it a bit hard at times. Can't upload the cd but I got it off Amazon-£3 ish. The powerpoint I used is attached. Any good?
We worked on each year group 'doing' a language not the country as such . My colleague and i found links to websites to help with the language, a related artist and anything else we could find.
We also set a competition- each member of staff from each year group had to learn to say hello in a set language. Every time a child said hello to them , they had to answer in 'their' language. Chn had to work out who was speaking what? ( got this idea from somewhere else- may have been cilt?!)
Feel free to have alook.
Hi Thea, we celebrated the day by taking the theme 'Countries of the world' and everyone dressed up in traditional dress/football kits etc from different countries. Activity-wise, as I'm still trying to get staff on board with MFL I gave them a range of activities they could try with the children throughout the day that they could choose from which I'll upload, plus every year group learnt a song/rhyme in another language which were performed in assembly, and ran three competitions for KS1, LKS2 and UKS2. It seemed to go down pretty well so hopefully we can build on that next year!

I was trying to put together something on this and courtesy of the Sunderland MFL Christmas resources site put together this Smartboard Notebook file. It includes a Connect4 game to play with the pupils in teams as they try and memorise what they ha…
