Talkabout Primary Languages

A network for all who teach languages to children

What do you think? They can be downloaded from the NACELL website. Are you using these for self-assessment with your children and if so do they work for you? I've printed off selected pages and given each student a folder to keep them in along with selected pieces of their work. We review them at the end of each term. I find the children like and understand the colouring bubbles pages but as for the more formal language ladder level stuff - well I've ignored that completely.
Do you use these? If you do, do you adapt any pages/add any bits?

I use 'I can' sheets at the end of each unit that the pupils RAG - I've added some examples below if you want to see what I mean. It gives opportunities for AfL and for pupils to tell me what they've enjoyed / hated / would like to do. Some of the recent comments were about my puppets - apparently they haven't been appearing as much this term as previously and they were missed! (They don't have the Fwk descriptors on at present - not sure whether will add them in the future or keep them for my records.)
I think the ELP used as you say selectively is a good idea - lots of either money to buy or photocopying / printing though to do for every child (450+)

These are great examples Lisa - thank you - I'll have a dig around for any of mine I have handy and upload them. Thank you - and the traffic lights are good. Presumably red means can't/need support?
Yes - green means I've got it, amber means I'm getting there and red is I'm still not sure. Pupils use RAG in most curriculum areas at WCPS - they put a blob of the appropriate colour in the margin to show the teacher how they feel they've done, then the teacher can use R A or G in relation to the l/o to indicate how they feel things have gone.
Hi again - here are some self-assessment sheets I've done to add to the Euro Portfolio - there are one for each year group 3-6 inclusive and they are based on the Framework. Also is an Excel spreadsheet markbook for the objectives for teacher use.

Thanks for those Jo!
Thanks Lisa, have just found your I CAN self assessment on clothes etc. and adapted it for use with my recent topic on France/Francophonie. It should just do the job for end of topic AfL, which I was planning on doing but needed a shove in the right direction. Thanks for sharing,
Caroline
You can use the Euro Portfolio / Lang Passport and update it all on the computer now - which is a big help if you want to avoid reams of paper, printing and photocopying... (see link on the main page)

Also have just attached some child friendly versions of the NC levels

Forgot to mention - I often get the children to video and or record themselves speaking so that I have electronic evidence of levels achieved. The children just download the clips from their cameras themselves now onto the computer and save in their own files. To avoid having too much film of children stored electronically (though parents sign consent forms when their children start school anyway) a lot of the role-play that is filmed (particularly to reach level 3) is in the form of sock puppets so faces are not on camera...
