Talkabout Primary Languages

A network for all who teach languages to children

26th September is the European Day of Languages (see blog post on my page - can't find the button to publish it on the front page I'm afraid!) Are you planning anything for this day? If so, what? Got any ideas to share? Any questions?

I've attached the flyer for this year, and will psot my ideas when I've settled the most pressing issue i my mind -which T-shirt design do I want?

Hi there

Just to say that I have just posted a similar thing on my blog, http://isabellejones.blogspot.com
As I really want to use the EDL this year to remind everybody of what languages bring to the curriculum,
I have also put some links to some interesting-I hope-leaflets, powerpoints and other documents with facts and figures to answer the question: Why learn Languages? It was refreshing to see that languages teachers around the world have to deal with the same issues...

Now I've decided that I fancy the skateboarding T-shirt, I can concentrate on deciding what to do on EDL. SO to start with I'm going through my files to find things I've used before. So I'm uploading EDL Who wants to be a Millionaire and another PPT called 10 favourite words. Can't claim credit for either - kind people on Yahoo MFLResources shared them. I'm also uploading a couple of quizzes - multichoice about Europe and Languages.

I'll keep looking as I'm sure I have more files somewhere!!

Couldn't load more than three files so here are another couple! The second is a file of words, definitions and languages to match together. It's related to an activity on the British Council website last year - I saved the page but the activity has disappeared so might need a bit of research to complete?! And the last is a list of how others have celebrated the day to give ideas.

More as I find them!

Hi, totally new to this site and the forum, and totally new to co-ordinating PMFL. BUT I wanted to say that I definitely will do something for EDL across the school, so I'm really looking for ideas!!! :)

These are great. I have to confess my planning isn't up to speed yet so not entirely sure what we will be doing yet... However have linked on to the website as suggested and have ordered my free pack of stickers... Hopefully staff at school will be feeling enthusiastic after holidays too so will upload any other resources asap.
Hi all - just remembered that there was an assembly plan that I adapted last year - worked quite well although I will never forgive my colleague for whispering to one of his lovely but gullible pupils that American was one of the 4 most spoken languages - the poor child trusted him and was laughed at for days!
Anyway, I'm sure you've got your own ideas, but here's the link if you want somewhere to start!

Just bumping this up the forum as the big day approaches
Received an e-mail from CILT saying that there are now some Primary ideas for EDl on their site - http://www.cilt.org.uk/edl/activities_primary.htm

Still waiting for the 'starter pack' ideas - perhaps they'll follow shortly!!

I think I convinced most of the staff yesterday to do something for EDL - one teacher is going to do Zulu with her class -sounds exciting! and we're having a dressing up competition and a special assembly. More plans to be made but a good start!
we are going to learn the HAKA - I'll try and upload the video which I got from youtube and converted to work in powerpoint and windows media player following Joe Dales instructions

In case it doesn't download the direct link is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kd0kDxP04eI which you then copy and paste into zamzar and enter your email address. They email you when it has been converted into mpg format so you can watch it in windows media player / powerpoint etc. offline. Which is very useful if your GfL has just filtered all your most useful sites as ours has over the holidays!
What an excellent idea - fits really well with the Rugby theme - which is great as I've just planned all KS2 Spanish for this term around the RWC. Thanks for the video link, Jo.
Always wanted to the Haka!!
